Western Australia’s natural beauty has taken centre stage with Walking with Colour: Cinematic Nature by Michael Haluwana, a new exhibition showing at the Museum of Geraldton from Saturday, September 20 to Sunday, February 1.

Michael Haluwana is a Perth-based, award-winning cinematographer whose career has taken him from filming with National Geographic and the BBC to working alongside Sir David Attenborough. For more than 20 years, he has filmed everything from vast night skies to elusive wildlife, always chasing the colours and patterns that make our natural world so compelling.

Walking with Colour brings those moments together. Visitors can explore detailed prints capturing extraordinary views of Shark Bay, Kalbarri, the Kimberley and Hutt Lagoon, alongside immersive marine projections and shifting colour spectrum screens. Each work reveals familiar places from striking new angles, in all their vibrancy.

Haluwana said the exhibition reflects his fascination with the contrasts of WA and the emotions those landscapes inspire.

“WA is full of contrasts, with brilliant skies, endless oceans and vivid deserts. I’ve tried to capture the emotion of those places as much as the image itself. My hope is that when people walk through the exhibition, they feel the same sense of awe I do when I am out there with my camera.”

Museum of Geraldton Regional Manager Leigh O’Brien explained the exhibition offers an opportunity for local audiences to see the state’s landscapes through the eyes of an internationally recognised artist.

“Michael has filmed some of the most extraordinary landscapes on Earth, yet the landscapes of our own state continue to be an inspiration. Walking with Colourshows us WA in a way that feels both familiar yet completely new, giving our community the chance to share in his passion.”

Audiences will also have the chance to hear directly from the artist and find out what it takes to work behind the lens at the highest level. As part of the Big Sky Readers and Writers Festival 2025, Haluwana will lead a special floor talk on Sunday, October 26, taking visitors behind the scenes of his career and guiding them through the exhibition. While the talk is free, bookings are essential on the Museum of Geraldton website.
